Gorge Bridge in Taos New Mexico is taking the movies to new heights

Updated: Nov 6

You may recognize the 5th highest bridge in the United States standing 650 feet high above the river, from many feature films including Natural Born Killers, Terminator Salvation, and Paul. If you’re afraid of heights, The Gorge Bridge may not be a walk you want to take!

You can park & walk across the bridge if you dare, but beware as the sidewalk is pretty narrow, and there's barely any room for two people to walk across the bridge. Many people were walking in the road which can be dangerous with cars speeding by from both directions. Another option is to drive across the bridge and park at the rest area.

Gorge Bridge is located along US Highway 64 West. One side of the bridge has a dirt area on the left for parking with fencing blocking the views of the bridge.

Drive across the bridge to the other side, where you'll find a rest area with accessible restrooms, paved walkways with picnic areas that are covered. Remember to pick up after yourself and leave no trace.

There is fencing, but you'll also discover the best views of the bridge, the gorge cliffs and the Rio Grande river below for photography are at the rest area.

Photo Tip: If you're planning on doing photography, It's always good to pack a variety of lenses on your travels, especially a telephoto zoom lens if you have one. Not only is it good for photographing wildlife, and zooming in to create abstract images, but you can use it to bring environments that you can not reach closer to you. At this location, I used two cameras to capture different perspectives of the landscape. One of my cameras had a wide angle lens to photograph more of the environment, and my other camera had a telephoto lens to zoom in on the bridge, cliffs and on the river below. Stay safe, enjoy the views, and never go beyond the fencing.
